Jean Keene
October 20, 1923 - January 13, 2009
Known as the "Eagle Lady", is most famous for feeding hundreds of bald eagles daily during the winter and early spring on the Homer Spit in Homer, Alaska. Born in Minnesota, Keene was a trick rider in a traveling rodeo in the 1950s, until a riding accident cut short her rodeo career. She moved to Alaska in 1977 and began by feeding a few returning eagles on scraps from the seafood plant where she worked.
Open Invitation to Family, Fans and Friends for
Farewell Ceremony & Spreading Ashes March 27
An open invitation from Jean's son Lonnie:
All are invited to come celebrate the life of my amazing Mother on Friday March 27th! The festivities will begin at 6PM at the "Eagle Spot". There will be a bonfire on the beach and I encourage people to let their imaginations run wild to help make this the epic event that it deserves to be. Are you a musician? Bring your instrument! Let's have a good old-fashioned sing-a-long... Do you have a special talent that might lend to the spirit of the party? Bring that along as well! We are calling this a "potlatch" and everyone is welcome to bring a dish of some sort to share but please don't feel that you have to. We will have snacks and such available for all. The Salty Dawg will also be staying open to serve as a warming spot as well.... They will have the bell ready and Kaoke Coffee specials going on.
So dress warm and come prepared to make this the memorable event that my Mom would have wanted. If anyone has anything special that they would like to offer or if you have any additional ideas or suggestions, feel free to contact me directly at redeaglelady@mac.com. I'll see you there and please be sure to say hello!
Plaque dedicated to Jean installed!
"Thanks to all who contributed their heartfelt thoughts and spirit to this Memorial Plaque to The Eagle Lady. For those of you who have never been to Homer, Alaska ... It's an incredibly beautiful place and the Land's End Resort has wonderful, scenic accommodations right at the end of the Homer Spit. The Land's End was a baseball throw from Jean's little home where she fed the Eagles for over thirty years. Her booth at the Land's End was where she liked to greet friends and photographers from all over the planet. Having been her guest on several occasions and always her admirer ... I can personally vouch for her legendary hospitality and her absolute love for wildlife. You can learn more about Jean's incredible life if you "Google" The Eagle Lady. Lisa and I are very humbled and proud to have made this small contribution to The Eagle Lady's memory. The next time you're in Homer...make sure you stop by the Land's End and say hello to Jean!" Hugs & Moogies to all ~ Bob & Lisa Campbell
