Bear Viewing

Brown Bears FightingExperience grizzly bears like you never thought possible!  We fly to the best place in the world for grizzly bear viewing & photography- Katmai National Park, Alaska. Come see grizzly bears fishing, clamming, raising cubs, playing, and occasionally even mating. Our grizzly bear viewing trips depart from beautiful Homer, Alaska. We fly by bush plane to the remote wilderness of Katmai, which has the highest concentration of protected grizzly bears in the world! Our tours cater to both wildlife photographers and wildlife viewers. The flight from Homer to Katmai is an adventure by itself with magnificent flightseeing including glaciers, volcanoes, and mountains all set against the backdrop of the blue ocean.

We land on the beach and join the bears on foot. Typically, we may see anywhere from 5 to 40 grizzly bears depending on the time of year. We have a perfect safety record both in the air and on the ground. People and bears in Katmai have a long history of peaceful coexistence so the bears are very tolerant of respectful bear viewers.

When is the best time to view bears in Alaska?

Bear Viewing The bear viewing is great from June through early September. This unusual reliability for bear viewing is due to the amazing abundance of food sources available along the Katmai coast. The bears have no reason to go elsewhere for food. To observe grizzly bear mating behavior June and early July are best. You are most likely to see grizzly bear cubs after the mating season ends in early to mid July. To watch grizzly bears fishing for salmon mid-July to the end of the season are best.   K Bay Air runs bear viewing tours in May although there can be less bears than later in the season. You will most likely see coastal grizzly bears digging for clams and mating during May.
