Seward Saltwater Halibut Fishing
Experience saltwater fishing at its best while enjoying the beauty of Resurrection Bay and Kenai Fjords National Park. Aside from the abundance of Halibut, Resurrection Bay affords a multitude of experiences, from the deep sea chase for a 400 pound world class Halibut, to a closer-in wildlife experience for the extended family. When Halibut fishing in Seward, it is very common to see Orca whales, sea lion, seal, otter, and rafts of seabirds.
Approximately two and on-half hours from Anchorage by car, or two by rail, Seward is a favorite fishing destination for visitors and Alaskans alike. There are over 40 Charter companies offering a variety of experiences: from small “6-pack” boats to larger vessels serving up to 20 people, full day and half day. Remember the tide turns every 6 hours and the best jigging is during slack tide when anglers are able to keep their lines taught and their bait on the bottom. So you should consider the tides and vessel departure times in order to optimize your fishing experience. Halibut fishing starts in April and ends in September, but the best months are June through September, with the peak generally in August.
People come from all over the world to experience the thrill of hooking a monster-sized halibut and Seward has some of the biggest. Lingcod or Yelloweye is a plentiful and tasty by-catch that helps to fill the freezer. The highlight to any fishing expedition out of Seward is always the natural beauty of this unique marine-based National Park: whales, seals, otter, sea lions and a variety of birds provide an endlessly fascinating array of natural wonder.
