Seward Saltwater Salmon Trolling

Whether jigging or trolling for salmon, Seward and Resurrection Bay is widely regarded as one of the best saltwater salmon fishing destinations in Southcentral  Alaska. It’s more protected than Prince William Sound and Whittier, although not quite as protected as Homer. However, Seward is three hours closer to Anchorage than Homer and is on the rail system.

Winter King Salmon, or “feeders” which feed in Alaska’s coastal waters prior to spawning in the rivers, can be fished year-round in Resurrection Bay and weigh in at 15 to 60 pounds.  Spawner Kings are available May through July and run larger then feeders, 25 to 80 pounds.  Mid-June through late September bring the Silvers, or Coho Salmon, known to be fighters and extremely acrobatic, in massive numbers. The Seward Silver Salmon Derby in August is one of Alaska’s original and most popular fishing derbies—in part because there are so many fish!  Late April through early June is when the Sockeyes run, but Sockeyes are not a targeted species for trolling.
