Water Taxi / Marine Ferry
The Kenai Peninsula coastline has some of the most beautiful scenery and abundant wildlife in Alaska. With three ice free ports, (Whittier, Seward, and Homer) two of which are on the rail system, the Kenai Peninsula is a major destination for water-based recreation and transportation.
Marine transportation systems are fairly sophisticated and reliable in these areas and provide a great way to get out and see the best of Alaska.
The Alaska Marine Highway System provides public ferry transportation to/from Homer, Seldovia and Whittier. Homer is the major point of embarkation for Kodiak, Seldovia and the Aleutian Chain. There will be a fast ferry connecting Homer and Seldovia beginning in June 2010. Their website is: http://www.dot.state.ak.us/amhs/routes.shtml
There are private water taxis and scheduled services that vary by area.
